FOCUS LABEL : EXTREMELY ROTTEN PRODUCTIONS

Dans les recoins les plus obscurs des dimensions infernales, Extremely Rotten Productions sévit depuis 2011 en promouvant des groupes locaux et internationaux dans des domaines allant du death metal old school au grindcore en passant par le death/doom et le brutal death metal. Depuis sa base située à Copenhague, le petit label indépendant n'hésite pas à prendre des risques en s'aventurant dans les régions les plus hostiles des cercles infernaux, à la recherche de groupes n'hésitant pas à repousser les limites de l'extrême, musicalement parlant bien sûr. FOCUS LABEL : MAGGOT STOMP

Quelque part en Californie, Maggot Stomp sévit depuis 2018 en promouvant une petite vingtaine de groupes, la plupart basés sur le sol américain. Malgré de modestes moyens, le petit label indépendant a su au fil du temps se faire un nom en affichant un catalogue assez hétéroclite, même si le death metal demeure sa priorité absolue. Ce qui est intéressant ici, c'est qu'on trouve du death décliné sous plusieurs styles comme le hardcore, le grindcore, le brutal death metal et, pour les plus nostalgiques, le death pur et dur façon old school. Un éventail aussi large méritait bien que ce label ait sa place dans cette rubrique et qu'une playlist lui soit entièrement consacrée. FOCUS LABEL : IRON FORTRESS RECORDS

Cette nouvelle rubrique a pour but de mettre dans la lumière des labels spécialisés dans le death metal à travers les groupes qu'ils promeuvent. L'honneur revient aujourd'hui à Iron Fortress Records, petite compagnie indépendante née en décembre 2022 dans sa base de Kansas City, Missouri. Le label se distingue par deux choses : une attirance pour les thèmes horrifiques par le prisme des films d'horreur kitsch des années 80 et une recherche constante pour des groupes pour la plupart débutants qui font du death à l'état brut, malsain, crasseux, cryptique, loin du death conventionnel et très direct dans son approche, avec un côté amateur qui fait sa particularité. Iron Fortress Records est au final un label qui suit son propre chemin grâce à une stratégie commerciale sortant de l'ordinaire. C'est sans doute ce qui fait que j'ai tout de suite eu de la curiosité pour eux. TOP 30 : ALBUMS DEATH METAL DE L'ANNÉE 2023

Alors que l'année s'achève dans quelques jours, il est temps de respecter la tradition en regardant dans le rétroviseur. Une chose est à retenir : ce fut une année prolifique pour le death metal avec beaucoup de sorties de qualité, surtout dans le domaine du death old school dont de nombreux groupes, vétérans ou récents, sont les fiers représentants. Que le death de la vieille école soit dans une forme aussi éclatante est bien entendu une excellente chose et laisse présager d'une année 2024 qui pourrait être tout aussi productive que celle qui s'achève. Reste que le choix de trente albums à extirper de la masse fut un exercice délicat. Le ressenti étant avant tout personnel, chacun pourra évidemment se faire sa propre idée.
